Hornfall

Two keeps face each other across a river on an island that has never existed before. You build, you raise armies, you spend gold like it is ammunition — and when the horn falls, someone's keep comes down. There are no draws in Hornfall.

What Hornfall is

Hornfall is a mobile-first, 3D multiplayer tower-defense war. Every match is fought on a floating island generated from a seed — a coastline, forests, boulders and a meandering river with natural fords, drawn fresh each time and identical for both players. You hold one half. Your opponent holds the other. Between you is water, and whatever crossings either of you decides to build.

You spend the match doing three things at once: fortifying the ground your enemy has to cross, building the economy that pays for all of it, and raising the army that goes and finishes the job. Every horn sends your units marching by real pathfinding — they route around forests and boulders, spread across the fords instead of filing down a lane, and re-plan the instant a new bridge changes the map. Win by breaking the enemy keep.

Three ways to spend, one way to win

  • Defense — arrow, frost and cannon towers, each upgradeable through three tiers. Going tall buys damage and range; going wide covers more ground. Neither strictly wins.
  • Offense — barracks, kennels and siege. This is the only path to the enemy keep, and the reason a pure turtle eventually loses.
  • Economy — mines and markets. Gold you don't spend is an army you didn't send, so the question is never "can I afford it" but "afford it when".

Why stalemates die here

Hornfall, wave 12. Every player army starts spawning 10% stronger than the last wave, compounding, forever. The neutral wilds don't scale. So the board tilts toward whoever attacks, the turtle stops being safe, and the match ends — decisively — with someone's keep in pieces.

Two more dynamics keep the middle of a match from going quiet:

  • Muster — buy an army right now instead of waiting for the next horn. Each send within the same wave costs 25% more than the last, so a panic muster is possible but never free. The counter resets at the horn.
  • Sorcery — three aimed casts. Sunder silences every tower in a circle for the seconds your wave needs. Haste pushes your units 40% faster. Mend repairs your keep, at a price that climbs each time you lean on it.

Duel or Horde

DUEL

1v1, invite by link

Play a friend over the network by sharing a link, or take on an AI opponent with one of three personalities — rush, turtle or eco. Someone's tower falls.

HORDE

Co-op survival

Up to two defenders against an endless neutral horde. Nobody wins — the wave you reach is the score, and the longest stands go on a global leaderboard. Offense is disabled: there is no enemy keep to storm, only the road to hold.

BOARDS

Three sizes

Isle, Realm and Continent. Bigger boards mean more prep time, more passive income and more ground to cover — and the same seed draws a different island on each size.

PWA

Installable, resumable

Add it to your home screen for fullscreen portrait play. Reload mid-match by accident and you land straight back in your battle — the seat is reclaimed, the solo game restores from autosave.

How to play

  1. Open the game. No install, no account, no launcher. Pick Duel or Horde Survival and a board size.
  2. Use prep time. Before the first horn, place your opening buildings. Most players open with economy and one tower covering the nearest ford.
  3. Read the crossings. The river's fords decide where the fighting happens. A bridge you build is a flank for both armies — build it when you're the one attacking.
  4. Bank, then spike. Let gold gather, then muster a warband mid-wave so it arrives while the enemy's towers are already busy.
  5. Cast at the right second. Sunder the two towers guarding the gap, Haste your wave through it, Mend only when the keep is genuinely in danger.
  6. Finish it. After wave 12 every army you send is stronger than the last. Stop trading and go break the keep.

Questions

Is Hornfall really free?

Yes. There is nothing to buy — no premium currency, no paid units, no energy timer. Advertising pays for the servers.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It runs in your browser. If you want it fullscreen with a home-screen icon, install it as a PWA from your browser's menu — that uses the copy already in your cache rather than downloading an app.

Do I need an account?

No sign-up, no password. Your settings live in your own browser, and match results are stored on our servers so leaderboards can exist.

Can a match end in a draw?

No — that's the whole point of the name. The Hornfall escalation from wave 12 compounds until one keep falls.

What happens if my phone drops the connection?

Your seat is held for a grace period and your buildings keep fighting while you're gone. Get back within it and you resume the same match.

Does it work on a laptop?

Yes. It's designed for touch first, and the same controls work with a mouse on any modern desktop browser.
